The new Dyson Gen5Detect.

Dyson’s latest vacuum cleaner is so powerful it can capture virus particles, the company says. The Gen5detect, as it’s called, is the company’s most powerful yet. It’s a cordless vacuum—Dyson’s new vacuums are always battery-powered now—and it projects a blade of green light across the floor, like the company’s previous V15 Detect. This is designed to reveal dust particles that might otherwise escape detection from the naked eye. This time, the green light is twice as bright, which improves detection range, the company says.

It has filtration technology that seals the machine so that captured particles can be retained, even as small as virus particles. James Dyson claims that the new machine offers the “deepest ever clean” from the company.

Not least, that’s down to a next-gen Hyperdymium motor which is claimed to rotate at 135,000rpm – up to nine times faster than a Formula One engine.

The problem with filters is that if there is any place where dirty air can leak out that the effect is reduced, so the Gen5detect is designed to provide whole-machine filtration.

Charlie Park, vice president of floor care, said: that the Gen5detect vacuum offers “HEPA (high-efficiency particulate absorbing) filtration to ensure that even virus particles as small as 0.1 microns remain trapped in the machine.”

This means it’s the first Dyson certified to be able to capture viruses. You can see how well it’s doing in use because the LCD screen on the rear of the cleaner shows the particle size. It also shows how many particles are being collected, so that you can stop vacuuming in one place when the particle count drops enough to indicate you’ve done it already.

The Gen5detect increases power when it’s necessary, reducing it when a surface is cleaner. Where many Dysons have a trigger control, here’s ther’s a single power button, which many find easier to use. This also makes it easier to switch hands as you clean.

Battery life is quoted at up to 70 minutes and the Gen5detect weighs 7.72 pounds.

There’s no price announced yet or when it will go on sale, but a vacuum that may help make our homes safe from viruses is an intriguing prospect.
